Everyone depends on their Internet connection on a daily basis to work, go to school, or to simply relax with some entertainment. That is why you want to know how to troubleshoot problems with your high-speed Internet connection when it is not working right. Here are some tips that will help get your service running again.

Run A Speed Test

The first thing you want to do is run a speed test to make sure that you are getting the speeds that you are paying for. The speed test service will perform a separate test for upload and download speeds, which should be very close to the package that you have. If the speeds are fine, any slowness or outages may be attributed to the specific site that you are visiting. See if that site has a support page and if any outages are reported. If your speed test comes back with overall speeds that are much slower than what you should have, you can do some further investigating.

Check With Your ISP For Known Outages

It is possible that your Internet service provider is having an outage in your area where people are not getting the proper speeds. You should be able to check for known outages by using their mobile app, checking their website, or even giving them a call. Many auto attendant phone systems know what area you are calling from based on your phone number and will tell you that there is a known outage and when it will be resolved. If there is no known outage, you should start testing other aspects of your network.

Remove Unnecessary Equipment

The easiest way to check your home network is to remove any unnecessary equipment when trying to connect to the Internet. Try to connect directly to the modem from your ISP, rather than go through any router or switch that you have. If the connection works when directly connected to the modem but not when you go through the router, the problem may be with your router.

Check The Physical Lines

If the direct connection to the modem doesn't work, try taking a look at the coax cable lines going from the pole to the modem. Are the connections tight in your home that use a coupler? Does the wire look damaged outside your home? Your problem may be that a squirrel chewed through lines and is causing intermittent problems. Reach out to your ISP and schedule a service call to see if that will resolve the issue.
